Most of the fatalities have been in Punjab, the most populated province where 70 percent more rain has fallen compared to last year's monsoon rain.

–Children are very vulnerable in such a situation. They play in the water, bathe in it, and then get electric shocks, says Mazhar Hussain from the regional disaster agency in Punjab.

Additionally, it was summer vacation in Punjab which may have further contributed to so many children being among the victims, he adds.

126 children have been confirmed among the total 266 fatalities in the country since the rains began on June 26, according to national disaster authorities. The number of injured is in the hundreds.

In August, the monsoon rain may increase even more, meteorologists warn. In normal years, most of the fatalities occur at the end of the monsoon period, according to the authorities.
