The Saudi-backed tour has long fought to ensure that players who left the PGA and DPA tours for the money-making LIV Tour should receive ranking points, which are primarily used to determine who gets to play in Major competitions. However, until now, the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) have stood in the way.
Starting with the LIV Tour in Saudi Arabia this week, that will change. However, there is no talk of a complete turnaround from the OWGR. Only players who place in the top ten in each event on the LIV Tour will receive points.
"Limiting the points to only the top ten players hurts those players who consistently perform at a high level but fall just outside that limit in a disproportionate way," LIV Golf wrote in a statement.
OWGR defends its decision by saying that the LIV Tour consists of fewer players and that players are selected by the tour rather than qualifying for it.
"Points will be awarded according to OWGR standards," the organization writes.
