Ovetjkin Nets 888th Goal, Closing in on Gretzky's NHL Record

Alexander Ovetjkin is seven goals from breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal record in NHL ice hockey.

In the night towards Friday Swedish time, the 39-year-old Russian forward star's 888th total and 35th for the season came when Washington defeated Philadelphia 3–2 at home and secured a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs as the first NHL team.

Captain Ovetjkin scored the 1–0 goal from close range 14.25 into the first period.

Ovetjkin and Washington have 13 regular season matches left before the playoffs. Wayne Gretzky's goal record in NHL is 894.
