Washington's star forward Alex Ovetjkin scored a hat-trick and took a step closer to legendary Wayne Gretzky's goal record when Vegas was defeated 5-2 in tonight's NHL.
The 39-year-old Russian now stands at 866 goals in his NHL career and thus has 29 goals left to pass Gretzky's record of 894 goals.
It was his 31st hat-trick in the league, but the first since December 31, 2022. He shot the third goal into an open net at the end of the match.
Washington's goalkeeper Logan Thompson, who played for Vegas last season, made 39 saves in the meeting, which was also his first in his former home arena since the trade.
Washington's Rasmus Sandin was credited with an assist.
