According to the British branch of Save the Children, it is “one of the longest school closures in the world.”
Many schools are closed; some buildings have been damaged, and others are being used as shelters for displaced people.
The worst-affected area is North Darfur Province in the western part of the country. Only three percent of over 1,100 schools are still functioning in the region, according to the children's rights organization.
The bloody civil war between Sudan's regular army and the paramilitary RSF broke out in April 2023.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed and twelve million people have been displaced, leading the United Nations to classify the conflict as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
