Thousands of villages are uninhabitable and 300,000 people have been evacuated – just in the last 48 hours. In total, 1.3 million people have been taken to safety from the water masses in the Punjab province in Pakistan, near the border to India.

Several tens have died, according to local officials.

Severe monsoon rains are the main reason why rivers and dams in neighboring India have overflowed. Thousands of rescue workers, most of them boat-borne, are participating in the effort and the military has been deployed, according to Irfan Ali Khan, head of Punjab's disaster authority.

The authorities are also trying to divert flooded rivers to agricultural areas, to protect cities.
