The mass death occurred when the buffalo herd stampeded to escape attacking lions, according to local officials. The lions are said to have chased the buffaloes all the way from the neighboring country of Botswana.
It is an unfortunate incident. The animals fell from a cliff down into a river and some fell over each other, says Ndeshipanda Hamunyela, spokesperson for Namibia's tourism department.
It is not the first time a large number of stampeding buffaloes die while fleeing from lions. In 2018, over 400 buffaloes died when they drowned in a river in northern Botswana in an attempt to escape the big cats.
Namibia in southwestern Africa is rich in wildlife and national parks. Around seven percent of the country's GDP comes from tourism.
