Among the 71 dead are prison staff, soldiers who were ordered to work in the facility, inmates and civilians, announces Asghar Jahangir, spokesperson for the Iranian judiciary, according to Iranian media.
The attack is reported to have been directed at the administrative parts of the prison, whose inmates to a large extent consist of political prisoners. But also visitor rooms, where the prisoners' family members go to meet their relatives, were damaged. Surrounding residential houses were also affected and people who lived there were killed, according to Jahangir.
However, it has been previously confirmed that also people like prosecutor Ali Ghanaatkar, who has imprisoned many Iranians for political reasons, were also killed in the attack. He has, among other things, been behind the prosecution of Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi.
