The estimate came from the UN agency Unicef the other day and the alarming number is also a doubling from the calculation made a year ago.
Furthermore, over 3.3 million children are in need of humanitarian support and many of the children "struggle daily to survive", writes the UN Children's Fund Unicef.
For several years, Haiti's civil society has been in ruins due to a complete political collapse and criminal networks that have taken control of large parts of the country.
One of our messages is that Haiti is at a crossroads, we must be clear that this generation cannot continue to wait for help, said Unicef's regional chief Roberto Benes to AFP.
The report stacks statistics that show the severity: Over 2,200 serious abuses against children were reported in 2024, in 213 of the cases the child was killed according to the UN, which also confirms over 400 cases of child rape and 160 gang rapes of minors during the period.
Almost a quarter of Haiti's population - around 2.7 million inhabitants - live in areas that are completely controlled by criminal gangs, according to Unicef:
"For countless children, trauma is a daily reality, and if protective authorities are not re-established immediately, a whole generation risks growing up in fear and total exposure to violence and exploitation."
