Over 50 people have been killed in a series of attacks targeted at civilians north of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince.

The attacks are reported to have been carried out by gang members in the middle of last week in the town of Laboderie, according to the organization RNDDH, which monitors human rights in the country.

"They killed more than 50 people and set fire to dozens of houses," the organization states in a report and describes the incident as an "extremely cruel massacre against the civilian population".

The organization writes that several people have still not been found after the incident, but that some survivors managed to escape.

Haiti is severely affected by violent crimes and large parts of the country are controlled by armed gangs.
