Over 30 Nigerian soldiers have been killed and a dozen injured in an attack carried out by hundreds of armed men near the border with Mali, according to Niger's defense department.
Thursday's attack in the town of Bani-Bangou in southwestern Niger is described by the department as "cowardly and barbaric".
Both Niger and Mali have had major problems with violence from Islamist extremists in recent years.
