The accident is said to have occurred late on Saturday and rescue personnel worked throughout Sunday to open the mine.
Initially, it was reported that 32 workers were trapped, but the figure is now being revised down to 22, according to a spokesperson for the Samangan province.
The condition of some of them was not good, but they received first aid and are feeling better now, says the spokesperson.
Mine-related accidents have occurred on several occasions in Afghanistan in recent years. In February 2022, ten miners died in the province of Baghlan in the northern part of the country, and in June 2020, seven people died in connection with a gas-related accident in the same province as this weekend's collapse.
Corrected: In an earlier version, the years for the previous accidents were incorrect.
