The accident occurred in Arequipa in southern Peru and is one of the worst in the country in recent years.
"We have 37 deaths and 24 injured," says Walther Oporto, regional director of healthcare in Arequipa.
Traffic accidents are common in Peru due to speeding drivers, neglected road maintenance, and lack of enforcement of current laws.
