The Meteo weather service registered 26,000 lightning strikes within a few hours on the mountain where the sheep were, 2,500 metres above sea level.

The sheep were kept close together in a fenced area, which was unusual in the past but is now necessary to protect them from wolves.

Sheep owners in the area regularly complain about the spread of wolves.
