Over 200 people have died in the floods in the Nigerian city of Mokwa, local authorities reported on Sunday.

The rain on Thursday caused the extensive flooding in Mokwa, an important marketplace where farmers come to sell beans, onions, and other foodstuffs.

At least 500 homes have been more or less destroyed by the water masses. More than 3,000 people have become homeless.

The rescue efforts had been called off on Sunday as they no longer believe they can find survivors.
