More than 20 people have been killed in an accident in Sri Lanka, where a bus skidded off a cliff early on Sunday. 35 other people are being treated in hospital, including the driver, according to the police spokesperson Buddhika Manathunga.

The accident occurred near the town of Kotmale, about 14 miles east of the capital Colombo. Pictures show the bus lying below a cliff while rescue efforts are underway to help the injured.

Nearly 50 people were on the bus at the time of the accident.

Deadly bus accidents are not uncommon in Sri Lanka, especially in the mountains. Often the cause is reckless driving and poorly maintained and narrow roads.
