At least 24 people have been shot dead and 55 injured in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan. This is reported by the organization Sudan Doctors Network.

The forces have shot at the besieged city of El-Fasher in the western parts of the Darfur region on Thursday.

RSF is said to have shot in densely populated areas at a market, in and around the city.

Since April 2023, a brutal civil war has been ongoing in the country. The city of El-Fasher has been the center of fighting between the Sudanese army and the militant RSF and it is the military's last stronghold in the Darfur region.

RSF has not commented on the shelling.

Sudan is in a humanitarian disaster due to the war and over 25 million people are affected, according to the UN. Over 40,000 people have died in or as a result of the civil war, according to international estimates, writes AP.

The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
