At least 184 people were killed in violence arranged by the leader of a powerful gang in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, in the Cité Soleil area, says Volker Turk to reporters in Geneva.

The latest murders bring the death toll to a staggering 5,000 people this year in Haiti.

All the victims were over 60 years old, according to the organization RNDDH, which monitors human rights in the country. They were allegedly attacked by gang members after their leader accused them of practicing "witchcraft" that made his child sick.

The densely populated Cité Soleil is one of the poorest and most violent areas in crisis-stricken Haiti. Large parts of the country are effectively lawless, with criminal groups ruling with violence.
