As of Tuesday, 3,442 Ebola cases and 1,521 deaths had been registered, according to government data.

The outbreak started in May and has been linked to the Bundibugyo variant, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment.

Currently, 797 patients are being isolated or hospitalised. 615 patients have recovered.

Almost 90 percent of cases have been reported from Ituri province in eastern Congo, but cases have also occurred in other provinces.

Neighbouring Uganda declared itself free of Ebola on Tuesday.
