Three major rivers have overflowed in the eastern parts of the country on Thursday. Rescue workers had to hurry to reach stranded families.

The number of evacuees is rising rapidly. Nearly 250,000 people have been forced to leave their homes.

Zainab Bibi, 54 years old, had previously ignored the authorities' call for evacuation, since her home village in the Narowal district is several kilometers from one of the rivers.

My family waited on our roof for two days for a boat to arrive, she says to AP.

At least 15 people have died in the city of Gujranwala and surrounding areas after the flooding, according to the police.

Heavy monsoon rains are the cause of the problems. More rain is expected on Friday and possibly also next week, according to meteorologists.

Releases from overflowing dams in India have further worsened the situation, according to Pakistani authorities.
