The fully confirmed death toll exceeded 100,000 when the media published an update on Friday.
The authorities in Russia have consistently concealed or significantly underreported the death toll, and it is likely to be substantially higher – but those counted in the media's survey have been verified through open source data, local media reports, cemetery visits, and more.
"Our volunteers have more than 10,000 death notices left to go through," Mediazona wrote on Friday.
Cautious estimates suggest that tens of thousands more Russians have died in the war. Figures from primarily Ukraine's Western allies put the number of dead and wounded Russians who have been taken out of combat at several hundred thousand, and sometimes up to a million.
When President Vladimir Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commented on an update from Mediazona and BBC a few weeks ago, when their reported death toll was around 95,000, he said he didn't know what was true and referred to the Russian military for facts.
