A boat with around 500 passengers on board has caught fire and capsized in northwestern Kongo-Kinshasa. 107 people have been confirmed dead and 146 are missing, according to the authorities.
The accident occurred on Thursday along the Congo River in the Équateur province and is the second fatal boat accident in the region in the past week.
On Wednesday, 86 people died and several are still missing after another boat accident in the same province.
Capsized boats are an increasingly common occurrence in the Central African republic where many abandon the few available roads in favor of cheap and poorly equipped wooden vessels that succumb to the weight of passengers and goods.
