Several places were attacked, including a military base and the long-besieged city of Djibo, reports AP, citing a relief worker and local residents. The city is located near the border area between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

The extremist group JNIM in the Sahel region, considered loosely tied to the al-Qaida terrorist movement, has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The attackers arrived in hundreds on motorcycles and other vehicles, practically encircling the city, according to a security source for AFP.

The attack occurred simultaneously with Burkina Faso's junta leader Ibrahim Traoré returning from Russia, where he participated in President Vladimir Putin's military parade in Moscow, marking the 80th anniversary of the "victory day" over Germany.
