In the commercial, Ovechkin is seen standing behind Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"I am Russian and I support my country," says Ovechkin.
I stand for peace and love, and I hope that in the world it doesn't matter who you are, I hope everyone understands that everyone wants peace, and everyone hopes that everything will be okay in the world.
He further says that he did not hesitate to appear in the clip.
"They asked me to do it. I said yes," he says.
Ovechkin's club, the Washington Capitals, general manager Chris Patrick says it's a "difficult situation" and that he understands people are upset.
