The goal means that Ovechkin – who also scored in Wednesday night's match against Boston – is only two goals away from Wayne Gretzky's career record of 894 goals.
The 39-year-old Russian's goal against Carolina came on a direct shot in numerical superiority with just over half a minute left of the second period.
