Ali Bongo and his family have been kicked out of their home country. Gabon's tough former president has been released from house arrest and turned up in Angola.
"The Bongo family has been released and has just arrived in Luanda", the Angolan presidential office announces via social media and attaches pictures of the family at an airport.
This has been made possible through contacts between Angola's President João Lourenço and Gabon's new leader Brice Oligui Nguema, it is stated there.
The Bongo family ruled Gabon for 55 years. Ali Bongo, who had taken over from his father Omar Bongo in 2009, was ousted in a military coup in 2023. Since then, he, his wife, and their adult son have been under house arrest.
