The International Biathlon Union (IBU) made the decision at its congress in Berchtesgaden, Germany, on Friday afternoon.
We are ready to deliver and are already making preparations, said the union's general secretary Rikard Grip at the congress.
Östersund won the vote against Finnish Kontiolahti, 37-10.
This will be the fourth time that Östersund has hosted the Biathlon World Championships; the last time was in 2019.
Before the championship comes to Östersund, the World Championships will be held in Otepää, Estonia, in 2027, Hochfilzen, Austria, in 2028 and Oslo in 2029.
Corrected: In a previous version, the incorrect number of times the Biathlon World Championships have been held in Östersund was stated.
