The accident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Dublin suburb of Lucan, according to the Irish Independent.
Although emergency services and police quickly arrived at the scene, Hansard's life could not be saved.
Together with Markéta Irglová, Hansard was awarded an Oscar in 2006 for the song "Falling Slowly" (Best Song) from the film "Once", in which they both played the lead roles.
He is survived by his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their child, who was born in 2022.
