For films released under 2027, stunt performers' increasingly advanced artistic achievements can thus be awarded.
"Since the early days of filmmaking, stunt design has been a fundamental part of filmmaking. We are proud to honor these technical and creative artists' innovative work", says the Academy's CEO Bill Kramer and Chairman Janet Yang in a joint statement.
The title "stunt designer" is new in the film world. Stunt coordinator Chris O'Hara was the first person to be credited as such for his work on the film "The Fall Guy", 2024.
But not everything is clear-cut regarding the new award.
It's not like 100 years ago when there was one person designing. It's a collaboration, says stuntman and director Chad Stahelski.
Stunt is such a collaborative and complicated area, how do we decide who the award goes to?
