Oscar-winning Chilean director Sebastián Lelio dies at 52

Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, who won an Oscar for “A Fantastic Woman,” has died. He was 52.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of filmmaker Sebastián Lelio, for health reasons. Our grief is great, and we will carry his memory with us forever,” the family wrote in a post on Instagram.

He died in Santiago on Friday. The cause of death will be investigated, prosecutors announced.

Lelio, who was born in Argentina but moved to Chile at an early age, achieved international success with “A Fantastic Woman” in 2017. It received, among other things, an Oscar for best foreign language film, as the category was called at the time.

The following year, he made “Gloria Bell” with Julianne Moore in the lead role - a remake of his own acclaimed film “Gloria” from 2013.
