Sean Baker's film "Anora" is about a prostitute woman in Brooklyn and her stormy affair with a Russian oligarch's son. It won the prize for best film, best director, and best female actress (Mikey Madison).
The "Spirit Awards", held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, California on Saturday, is considered the more rugged, cool version of the glamorous Oscars gala. It highlights the best independent films and TV shows with a budget of up to 30 million dollars, approximately 320 million kronor.
Among "Anora's" competitors for best film were, among others, “The Substance” which is also Oscar-nominated.
Other Oscar-nominated winners at the weekend's gala were Kieran Culkin for best male supporting role in "A real pain" and Jesse Eisenberg for best original screenplay for the same film.
The prize for best documentary went to “No Other Land,” which is also nominated for an Oscar, as well as the animated Latvian film "Flow" which won best international animated film.
The Oscars gala will be broadcast on Disney+ starting at 01:00 on March 3.
