Carl Bengtström set a Swedish record in the 400-meter hurdles at the European Championships in Rome with a time of 47.94. On Wednesday at the European Championships in Birmingham, Oskar Edlund took over the record when he ran 47.81 in the semifinals. His previous personal best was 48.26.
It was so nice to just enjoy the finish line. I just felt like, “Today is going to be a really good day,” says Edlund.
Edlund won his heat and is through to the European Championship final.
"I see myself as an underdog, but I have a good chance," says Edlund about his medal chances.
In the final, he will face, among others, Norwegian star Karsten Warholm.
"I was very impressed. Congratulations, it's very good," says Warholm about Edlund's record-breaking run.
When asked if he sees Edlund as a threat for the gold, Warholm laughs.
But I'll say yes so you get a headline. But I'm very impressed, it's fantastic. He'll go for a podium and I will too, so it will definitely be a Swedish-Norwegian duel, says Warholm.
Carl Bengtström came third in his heat with a time of 48.47 and misses the final.
Damn tough. Of course I'm extremely disappointed but I did what I could today, says Bengtström.
