Organ Donation Registrations Drop 35 Percent in 2024

The number of people who registered with the donation register decreased sharply between 2023 and 2024. ”It is a worrying trend – not least considering that we are becoming more and older and the needs are increasing”, says Anna Aldehag, unit manager at the National Board of Health and Welfare in a press release.

The number of new registrations in the donation register decreased from 91,000 in 2023 to 58,500 in 2024, which is a decrease of 35 percent.

At the same time, the waiting times were significantly extended. The median waiting time for undergoing a heart transplant increased from 93 days to 150 days between 2023 and 2024.

820 organ transplants were performed in 2024, of which 709 were from deceased donors.

In June this year, almost 1.9 million people were registered in the donation register, which corresponds to 18 percent of the population. 80 percent of Swedes are positive about donating organs after death, according to the National Board of Health and Welfare.

"The fact that you have registered does not mean that you will become an organ or tissue donor when you have died. The likelihood that you will someday need a donated organ is much higher," says Anna Aldehag.
