The Öresund Bridge sets a new record for passenger numbers - for the second year in a row. This comes as the bridge celebrates its 25th anniversary.

By New Year's Eve, nearly eight million passengers are expected to have crossed the bridge this year, reports SVT Skåne. This beats last year's record figures by 5.5 percent.

There are several reasons for the increase. Truck traffic has hit a record high, while car commuting has increased by almost nine percent and leisure traffic from Germany has risen by six percent.

Last year's record was already broken on December 8.

"Malmö has broken records for guest nights during the summer and Copenhagen Airport, like the Öresund Bridge, has set record after record for travel," says Linus Eriksson, CEO of the Öresund Bridge, in a press release.

The Öresund Bridge was inaugurated in 2000 and is a 16-kilometer fixed link between Sweden and Denmark.
