Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán claims that Ukraine is not a sovereign country, reports Reuters. Ukraine responds by saying that Orbán is influenced by Russian propaganda.

The statement was made in a podcast when he talked about allegations that Hungarian reconnaissance drones had violated Ukrainian airspace. It was on Friday that Ukraine reported that several so-called reconnaissance drones had entered Ukrainian airspace, and that they "probably" had Hungarian origin. When it was supposed to have happened was not specified.

Ukraine is not at war with Hungary, it is at war with Russia. It should be worried about drones at the eastern border, says Orbán.

I trust my ministers, but if it were the case that it actually flew a few meters there, what does it matter? Ukraine is not an independent country. Ukraine is not a sovereign country, Ukraine is financed by us, the West gives it money, weapons, he adds.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha writes in a post on X that Orbán is still "influenced by Russian propaganda".

Hungary is the EU country that has maintained the closest contact with Moscow after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Hungary has intensified its criticism of the regime in Kyiv recently, with a raised tone in Ukraine's response. Hungary has, among other things, opposed a future Ukrainian EU membership.
