The U.S. arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is "not enough" for Venezuela to return to normal, according to opposition politician Edmundo González Urrutia.

What is required now is that "all Venezuelans who have been deprived of their freedom for political reasons be released," he says in an Instagram post from Spain, where he is in exile.

According to several international observers, González Urrutia is the rightful winner of the 2024 election in Venezuela. That election result must also be respected, he adds in his post.

President Donald Trump stated after their capture that the United States will govern Venezuela until power is taken from the Maduro regime; otherwise, continued attacks and occupation await.

Maduro and his wife are currently in custody in New York. Maduro will appear in federal court in the city on Monday to have the charges against him formally read out.
