As awesome as it is to play on center court at the Australian Open, it's equally tough to have to leave early. A broken Hugo Gaston retired in his match against world number two, Jannik Sinner, after two sets.

The Italian superstar went up 2–0 in sets (6–2, 6–1) at Rod Laver Arena in just over an hour. There was no more play in the first round for the reigning champion.

Opponent Hugo Gaston was unwell and unable to continue. The Frenchman had to retire after just two sets.

I noticed that he couldn't serve properly, especially in the second set. This is not how you want to win your matches. He is an incredibly talented player, he has a fantastic touch and moves very well. So I knew I had to play at a very high level from the start, said Jannik Sinner in the victory interview.

The 24-year-old Italian has won the Australian Open the last two years and is one of the favorites to win again in 2026.
