One year since the success – Sema hopes for a repeat

Ken Sema's sensational performance as left-back against Estonia in the European Championship qualifiers last autumn was one of the big talking points of the 5-0 victory. That's where his national team career took off. Now Sema is hoping for a new, equally cool, evening in Tallinn. I have good memories, says the goal-scorer against Slovakia.

Ludwig Augustinsson was injured, called up substitute Martin Olsson match-trained. Therefore, then-national team captain Janne Andersson chose to bet on Sema.

The England pro (Watford in the second league) did not disappoint. On the contrary. Teammates, experts, supporters - praise came from all directions.

It's really appreciated. I clearly hope to play. I've been waiting for this for a very, very long time. I've never had that breakthrough in the national team that many thought would come. It's fun to have gotten the chance - and to have taken it, he said then.

In Jon Dahl Tomasson's 3-5-2 formation, Sema played left winger from the start in the 3-0 win at home against Estonia in September. This time in the Nations League.

A few days earlier, he had replaced Anthony Elanga at halftime against Azerbaijan in Baku.

He wanted me to come in and contribute with energy and create forward.

And the most fun - the first national team goal against Slovakia.

Janne Andersson's trust from last autumn has been inherited by Tomasson, whose delight over players who can handle different positions should not be underestimated when it comes to team selections.

The prospect of Sema once again - in one way or another - getting to know Lilleküla (formally known as A. Le Coq Arena) in Tallinn should be considered good.

I've been around for a long time but haven't always played, and then I got to play that match. It was important, we needed to win, and it felt like I took the chance, says the 31-year-old.

I have good memories. But at the same time, it was a year ago. Now I want to do the same thing again.

A year ago, Sema emphasized the importance of never giving up. For many years, he often got a spot in the squad, but rarely playing time.

The last visit to Tallinn provided proof that perseverance often wins.

I'm one of the few who have never been sure here in the national team. But I've always worked on and tried to do as well as I can. Now it's a bit different with a new coach and how we play. I think it suits how I want to play football. It benefits me more.

Sweden meets Estonia at 20.45 on Monday evening.
