On the one-year anniversary of the overthrow of Syria's long-time dictator Bashar al-Assad, the country's new leader is urging the population to unite.

Dressed in military uniform, President Ahmed al-Sharaa spoke outside the famous Umayyad Mosque after Monday's morning prayers.

The current phase requires all citizens to unite in their efforts to build a strong Syria, consolidate stability in the country, and achieve a future worthy of the sacrifices the people have made, he said.

The al-Sharaa Islamist-led alliance launched a lightning offensive in late November last year and captured the capital Damascus on December 8, after nearly 14 years of civil war.

The takeover put an end to over five decades of the Assad family's iron-fisted rule.
