The health authority of the state of Louisiana reports that the first death after infection with bird flu has been registered in the USA.

This concerns a patient in the state of Louisiana, who has been hospitalized since mid-December. The affected person had been in contact with sick and dead birds kept in private ownership on a backyard, reports the authority.

The risk of infection for the general public remains low, emphasizes the health authority.

So far, about 60 people have fallen ill in the latest outbreak of bird flu in the USA, but the others have had milder symptoms. Most of the cases have been linked to animal husbandry.

Earlier, the US Department of Agriculture USDA has ordered tests of unpasteurized milk throughout the country.
