"All 50-meter distances are finally added to the Olympic Games program! The best news ever for the swimming world", writes the Swedish swimming queen on Instagram.
Previously, there has only been one 50-meter distance on the Olympic Games program, in women's and men's freestyle.
"Including six new events improves the program's balance and gives more opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills on the world's largest stage", says World Aquatics President Husain al-Musallam in a press release.
Sarah Sjöström has taken a break from swimming as she is going to become a mother. However, she is aiming to participate in her sixth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in about three years.
The 31-year-old won two Olympic gold medals in Paris last year, in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle.
