The day after the opening ceremony in Milan, unrest broke out amid protests against the Olympics.

Thousands of people marched through Milan in a climate protest against the Olympic Games.

Overall, the event was reported to be peaceful, but a small group of protesters reportedly threw rocks at police and set off fireworks. Police responded with water cannons to disperse the protesters.

The police were on high alert beforehand and in riot gear, after over 100 police officers were injured in a similar protest in Turin last weekend.

"The Olympics are no longer sustainable from either an environmental or a societal perspective. They have done their part," says one protester.
