The American basketball player Brittney Griner – who became world-renowned for being imprisoned in Russia for ten months – and her wife Cherelle Griner have had their first child, report American media.

The son was born earlier in July.

Griner, who plays for the WNBA team Phoenix Mercury, is on her way to the Olympics in Paris to represent the USA.

It's a bit sad since I have to leave him, but at the same time, he will understand, says Griner in the podcast "She knows sports".

Griner became a pawn in a power play between the USA and Russia when she was arrested at an airport outside Moscow in February 2022 with cannabis oil in her luggage. She was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for drug offenses. However, an agreement was reached between the countries, and Griner was released in exchange for the arms dealer Viktor But.
