Alysa Liu won double Olympic gold in figure skating in Milan and Cortina, both individually and as part of a team. But the 21-year-old is not aiming to follow up her success, writing on social media that she is completely above competing in the upcoming season.
However, there does not appear to be any serious injury or similar issue behind the decision. She plans to continue training during the break from competition and aims to compete again next season.
"I always want to challenge myself in new ways so that my artistry and my skating can develop," she writes on social media.
The decision means the American will miss the World Figure Skating Championships in Tampere, Finland, next year.
