French Olympic champion Yannick Agnel is to stand trial. The 33-year-old is accused of rape and sexual assault.

In May, the Frenchman appealed the decision to stand trial, but the motion was rejected and it is now clear that the trial will proceed.

The swimmer is suspected of having had a relationship with the coach's daughter, who was 13 at the time. According to the prosecutor, the incidents took place in various locations between the end of 2015 and August of the following year. Agnel has always maintained that the relationship was consensual.

The swimmer won two gold medals and a silver at the 2012 London Olympics and has medals in other major championships. After the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he retired from elite sports.
