With a time of 20.88 seconds, McEvoy broke Cesar Cielo's 2009 record by three hundredths of a second, which was set in the now-banned 'supersuit'.
"Congratulations, Cam! Lightning-fast swimming! Incredible!" wrote Brazilian Cielo in a post on social media.
McEvoy is the reigning Olympic champion in the event from Paris 2024 and a two-time world champion.
