It became a short stay in the North American professional league MLS for the former Swedish national team defender. Mellberg left Brommapojkarna to take over St Louis as late as in November, but is already saying goodbye now.

St Louis has gone at least rough in the league's western conference. The team is second to last of the 14 teams and has not won in the last eleven matches.

"The decision to part ways with Olof is about more than just results. We have analyzed the team's performances based on a number of factors," says St Louis club director Lutz Pfannenstiel, without going into exact details, in a statement.

"Our fans deserve a team that performs better, and that's what we're going to give them."

It was ultimately only 15 matches in St Louis for Olof Mellberg. He is replaced by the reserve team's head coach David Critchley in waiting for a new permanent solution.
