Ola Lindgren extends his contract as national team captain for Finland's handball men over the European Championship qualification 2028. That he gets continued trust is not surprising. The 61-year-old, one of Swedish handball's really big ones, is namely on his way to write history in the neighboring country.

We have worked for several years to move forward the positions and taken several steps forward, says Lindgren, national team captain in Finland since 2019, to Yle Sporten.

Finland has never reached a European Championship final before but is now close. Victory at home against Montenegro on Thursday would secure at least a third place in the qualifying group. That is enough to judge to secure a spot in the European Championship 2026 in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

We know what a victory would mean, says Lindgren.

Finland concludes the qualification with an away match against table leader Hungary on Sunday.
