Two days without alcohol will give commanders time to train all soldiers in discipline, Supreme Commander Benjamin T. Watson announced.
In addition to the alcohol ban, a 30-day "reflection period" is being introduced. During this period, Americans stationed on the island will be subject to a curfew from midnight to 5 a.m.
The weekend's robbery-murder, which Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called "exceptionally brutal," has sparked outrage in Japan. According to local media, the 39-year-old victim was found strangled in a hotel room on Saturday, and the suspect, a 20-year-old American, was arrested the following day.
About 54,000 American soldiers are stationed in Japan, most of them in the southern prefecture of Okinawa.
