About an hour after the speech ended, North Sea oil had risen to just over $106 per barrel in futures trading for June.

US WTI oil also rose, passing $104 a barrel in May futures trading. Just before the speech, the price was around $98.

In the speech, Trump said, among other things, that the United States would attack Iran "extremely hard" in the coming weeks, but also that the operation was coming to an end. He called on countries that import oil from the region to "show courage" and get involved in securing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
